<br />
Whether it’s Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, or a Fort Fisher Beach wedding, all are easily accessible for your guests, as well as vendors. <br />
<a name='more'></a>The Fort Fisher Historic Park has two Gazebos on the ocean which are available to rent for weddings. Keep in mind that rules do apply for marrying on the beach in Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and at the Fort Fisher Historic Park on the beach. <br />
No matter if you’re planning an intimate gathering for family and a few friends or an extravagant to-do, the possibilities are limitless on Pleasure Island. Maybe you’re in love with the idea of getting married at the beach, but not so much on the beach? That’s not a problem either. Pleasure Island has lots of popular sites like the <a href="https://www.ncparks.gov/carolina-beach-state-park" target="_blank">Carolina Beach State Park</a> or the <a href="http://ftfishermilrec.com/" target="_blank">Ft. Even The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher provides a unique indoor <a href="http://www.ncaquariums.com/fort-fisher-plan-your-event" target="_blank">wedding by the sea experience</a>.<br /><br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The 21st Annual Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off is officially CANCELLED.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In case you haven't heard the news, the Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off, originally scheduled for April 8, 2017, has officially been cancelled. It is with a sense of pride, remembrance and sorrow that we announce the end of this signature spring event after 20 great years.<br />
<br />
The Chowder Cook-Off celebrated delicious area food, great music and fun for the entire family. Chefs from southeast North Carolina's finest restaurants each brought their own unique chowder recipes - seafood or otherwise - and invited guests to sample and judge the selections. Attendees were able to sample a true taste of Cape Fear during this friendly chowder competition, held each spring at Carolina Beach Lake Park in Carolina Beach. Kids were able to play in the park's playground and the Kidz Zone, with face painting, a giant inflatable slide, laser tag and more. The sounds of live music filled the air all day as the children played and the grownups enjoyed a few adult beverages along with scrumptious chowder.<br />
<br />
Although the event was much loved by the local community, after careful consideration, the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors decided to officially end the annual event. Unfortunately, the Chowder Cook-Off became a victim of the increasingly high cost of seafood, lack of restaurant participation and the growing complexities of outdoor events.<br />
<br />
The Board will be meeting very soon with the assistance of the local restaurant community to determine a future culinary-based event (or events) to showcase our area's restaurants and food purveyors.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, the 2017 season will not be without fun events, great food and lively music! The first ever <a href="http://pleasureislandnc.org/events-details.php?id=201&month=April">Spring Pleasure Island Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival</a> will be held at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area on Sunday, April 23, with 12 great bands on two stages with plenty of seafood, face-painting, laser-tag, crafters, artists, beer and wine, and fun for all ages. This inaugural Spring event will feature headliners Jonny Lang and Samantha Fish along with ten other bands overlooking the banks of the might Cape Fear River in Kure Beach, NC.<br />

<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Donating
blood is a way to give back. Whether you’re donating for a friend
or a family member, or just because you feel it’s the right thing
to do to help someone else out, giving blood can be a rewarding
experience; knowing that you’ve helped change or save a life. Not
to mention, blood is something most people have to spare, so when you
give blood you’re helping keep blood on the shelf for those who
need it an emergency. And if that’s not enough, donors get free
juice and yummy cookies!</span></div>

<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">The
Town of Kure Beach is hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive on
Friday, March 3, 2017 from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm at the Community
Center at 118 N. 3rd Avenue. Whether you're a</span><span style="font-size: 14.6667px;"> seasoned donor, or you've never donated blood before, everyone is welcome at the blood drive -- however, donors must meet certain eligibility requirements to </span><span style="font-size: 11pt;">ensure the safety of the donation for both the donor and the
recipient. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Some health and lifestyle issues could affect donations
like medications and vaccinations, recent travel, medical treatments,
and general medical conditions. The staff for the blood drive will
ask you some questions to determine your eligibility on the day of
the donation. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Giving
blood isn’t that difficult, but you’ll want to come prepared.
Have a light meal and plenty to drink before you come to donation
center. Don’t forget your donor card, driver’s license or two
other forms of identification. If you are taking any medications,
make sure you bring the names of each. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>

For
anyone who wants to schedule a blood donation, please
visit <span style="color: #00000a;"><a href="http://www.redcrossblood.org/">www.redcrossblood.org</a></span> and
type “Kure” into the “Find a Blood Drive” search bar. Walk-in

through blood donation or helping spread the word, to help make this
drive a success.</div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Now is your chance to learn how you can save a life. The Town of
Kure Beach will host an Adult CPR, AED, and First Aid certification
class on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Community Center. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">The class
will run from 10:30am until 3:30pm and provide the opportunity to
earn an American Heart Association certification. Kure Beach’s
State Fire Instructor, Jim Dugan, who has over 30 years of extensive
experience, will teach the class. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px;">This training and certification is incredibly valuable for a variety of careers and circumstances. Whether you’re a healthcare worker, flight attendant, security guard, lifeguard, personal trainer, police officer, childcare provider or babysitter, a coach, a teacher, or a parent; just about everyone can benefit from learning how to perform CPR, use an AED (automated external defibrillator), and understand basic first aid. </span></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">CPR
and AED are performed whenever someone is not breathing and when the
heart is not beating during cardiovascular emergencies, cardiac
arrest, and stroke. Other emergency situations where CPR can be used
include: when someone is choking on something that blocks the airway,
near-drowning events, electrical shocks, or severe allergic
reactions.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">AEDs
are lightweight, portable devices that produce an electric shock
through the chest to the heart to allow for a normal heart beat to
resume following cardiac arrest. Because AEDs are portable, they can
be used by non-medical people.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Class
size is limited to the first 12 who register. The cost to participate
is only $40. Interested participants should bring your payment by
Town Hall to register. Lunch will be provided. You do not have to be
a Kure Beach resident to participate. Questions can be directed to
Nikki Keely at Town Hall, (910) 707-2015 or n.keely@tokb.org.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Sometimes
it’s not always easy to do the right thing when it comes to doing
what’s best for the environment — like properly disposing of
household chemicals and other toxic products. It can be tempting to
pour solvents and hazardous liquids down the drain or on the ground,
or toss them in the trash, but these waste products can be harmful to
our health and to the environment if they are absorbed into the
ground or into our water supply. Fortunately, New Hanover County
Environmental Management and UNCW’s Sustainability Committee have
partnered to bring residents a more convenient way to dispose of
household hazardous waste, making it easier to do what’s right.</span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: 11pt;"> </span>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">The
HazWagon, a new mobile collection unit, makes it easier for residents
to be stewards of the earth by providing a free, convenient option
for recycling waste and diverting it from the landfills. Locally, the
HazWagon will pick up on Fridays at the Carolina Beach Mike Chappell
Park (the south side of the park, across from the tennis courts) from
10:00 am to 2:00 pm (Note this is a temporary location and the final
local in Carolina Beach is yet to be determined). </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Residents
can bring chemicals like aerosols, antifreeze, batteries, cell
phones, cooking oil, drain cleaners, fertilizers, motor oil and oil
filters, paints, stains, varnishes, and sealers, just to name a few.
They also accept electronics like TVs, monitors, and CPUs. For a full
list of acceptable materials, visit <a href="http://recycling.nhcgov.com/services/household-hazardous-waste/?utm_source=Notify+Me%3A+Town+of+Kure+Beach&utm_campaign=f05bb91170-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_49247a7d43-f05bb91170-44953449">here</a>.
</span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">In
addition to the HazWagon, residents can still bring household
hazardous waste to the permanent facility located at 3002 US Highway
421 North, Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8
a.m.-noon.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">All
of the materials collected from residents are recycled, repurposed,
neutralized, and used for alternative power generation, or disposed
of in accordance with state and federal law. Please be aware, due to
space limitations, no more than 10 gallons of liquid waste and no
more than two TVs can be brought to the HazWagon at a time. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">So,
as the warmer season approaches, and spring cleaning is on
everybody’s list of to-do’s, remember that it’s also a great
time to detox your homes. </span>

<div>
The Annual Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival Art Auction is a fun- and art-filled event to help support the overall Festival. With costumes, music, appetizers, raffles and opportunities to bid on fantastic works of art from all around the country, it's no wonder the event has already sold out of advance tickets! But don't worry -- tickets will still be available at the door.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Art Auction is scheduled for February 23, 2017 from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the <a href="http://seawitchtikibar.com/" target="_blank">SeaWitch Cafe & Tiki Bar</a>, 227 Carolina Beach Ave. N., Carolina Beach.</div>

This year's theme is, of course, Mardi Gras and participants wearing Mardi Gras costumes will receive 5 extra raffle tickets for door prizes. Admission at the door is only $5.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There will be both a silent and live auction, where participants can bid on amazing original fine art and fine crafts. Tim Perry of Island Auction Co. is a professional auctioneer who will bring lots of fun to this glamorous event.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"The art auction is our major fund raiser for the annual Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival," says Jillian Boivin, president of hosting organization Island Arts and Culture Alliance. "The Festival brings fine artists and crafters from around the region to show and sell their artwork."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Artwork made at the interactive festivals, as well as pieces donated from local artists will be available at the auction.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"We have held the silent auction dinner for 3 years and this year we thought a live auction would be fun along with our Mardi Gras theme to make it a great night out," says Skip Sprauge, owner of Tip Top Frames and vice president of the Alliance.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Two large original paintings that were painted by the community at last year's festival and directed by Jan Feury, local artist, will be available along with artwork provided by more than 20 artists.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The festival is the flagship event for the Island Arts and Culture Alliance (IACA), a non-profit, community-based organization. IACA's mission is to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of the literary, visual and performing arts in the island community, in order to enhance the quality of life in our area.</div>

We're officially in tax season, which means it's time to get your official IRS documents, income statements, receipts, deductions and any other financial documentation together to file your yearly tax return. Although it's not the most fun time of year, some residents of Carolina Beach may be able to take advantage of New Hanover County's free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://src.nhcgov.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-our-vita-tax-program-2017/" target="_blank">VITA program</a> offers tax help to low- and moderate-income people with a focus on those 60 or older, completely free of charge. <span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">The

matter your passion, volunteers contribute to our local state parks
in a variety of ways like improving hiking trails, leading guided
tours, sharing your expertise in wildlife habitats, assisting with
special events, and helping maintain the natural beauty of the parks,
as well as many other opportunities that help enhance, preserve, and

<span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">For
the past several years, the Surfrider Foundation has spearheaded a
cheap and resourceful way to help rebuild our area dunes: recycled
Christmas trees. On Saturday, January 28, The Surfrider Foundation, a
nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and
enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches, is coordinating
with the town of Carolina Beach and a slew of volunteers to partake
in the fourth annual dune rebuilding program using the discarded
trees.</span></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;"> </span></span>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">Built
either by wind or water flow, our beaches’ sculptured sand dunes
are the epitome of coastal beauty. But they have a purpose that goes
beyond the aesthetic. They provide much needed protection to ocean
front property from waves churned up in storms. Our dunes are also
natural habitats for sea turtles, nesting birds, and native
vegetation. </span></span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L7PAUee1HUI/WIYoO-rrKdI/AAAAAAAACNg/CqZkrd_MJ6cu2Slof9IH6plyAjA9apzsACK4B/s1600/surfrider%2Bfoundation%2Bdune%2Brebuilding.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L7PAUee1HUI/WIYoO-rrKdI/AAAAAAAACNg/CqZkrd_MJ6cu2Slof9IH6plyAjA9apzsACK4B/s640/surfrider%2Bfoundation%2Bdune%2Brebuilding.jpg" width="496" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">After
this year’s Hurricane Matthew, some of our beaches experienced
moderate erosion. The hammering waves of the storm pulled sand away
from the beaches and destroyed dunes. By forming a sand-like fence
with the used Christmas trees, the sand will fill back in over the
trees, rebuilding the diminished dunes. And hopefully by Spring, the
natural ecosystem will be restored, just in time for the summer
season. </span></span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">The
Surfrider Foundation encourages the community to volunteer alongside
them on the 28th to place the trees on the dunes. This
family-friendly event begins at 10:00 am. Volunteers are asked to
meet at the Periwinkle public beach access. Look for the Surfrider
tent and check in there. Public parking is available at Seaoats Lane
just 2 blocks North of the access. Volunteers are asked to bring a
shovel, hammer, tape measure, and scissors. </span></span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">The
town of Carolina Beach will provide free Christmas tree removal every
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, Jan. 9 through Jan. 30. If you’d
like your tree to help grow the dunes, have it out by the curb on
Jan. 27 and remove all decorations and lighting. For more
information, visit the Cape Fear Surfrider Facebook page <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Cape.Fear.Surfrider.Foundation/">here</a>. </span></span>

<br />
According to a <a href="http://townofkurebeach.org/vehicle-re-entry-decals-to-go-on-sale-january-3rd.aspx" target="_blank">news release from the Town of Kure Beach</a>, the 2017 Kure Beach Vehicle Re-entry Decals for residents and non-resident property owners will go on sale at Town Hall beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2017.<br />
<br />
These decals are not mandatory, but serve as an aid to identify Kure Beach residents and property owners in order to expedite the re-entry process over Snow's Cut Bridge onto the island in the event of a natural disaster.<br />
<br />
Between January 3 and March 31, a re-entry decal costs $5. After March 31, the cost of a re-entry decal increases to $15, so it's best to get one before spring.<br />
