Spotlight on Business - Kure Memorial Lutheran Church

Kure Memorial Lutheran Church evolved from Kure Memorial Chapel, a non-denominational Sunday School organized by a retired Lutheran pastor and a Baptist minister. In 1951, all residents of Kure Beach were invited to decide what denomination the only church in town at that time should be. The vote was for "Lutheran." The Baptists then began their fine church just a few blocks away. For over half a century KMLC has been proclaiming the good news of God's love on Pleasure Island.

So why now has this church (or any church for that matter) decided to join a community Chamber of Commerce?

It doesn't matter what you sell or what service you offer, any business or professional member of the Chamber is essentially in the business of creating and nurturing relationships. And that's what Kure Memorial is about also: creating and nurturing relationships among people, and between people and a loving God.

Our mission, as followers of Jesus Christ, is to be a welcoming and caring people, proclaiming the good news, sharing our faith, and serving God and this community. We build Habitat for Humanity Houses, support the HELP Center, and deliver Hospice meals. Four AA and NA programs meetin in our facilities. We established the first quality Pre-School in Kure Beach, our youth have a great time working together helping people here and as far away as Homestead, FL, adn we work with the great summer programs at the Agape/Kure Beach Retreat Center. Our growing membership is a joyful family of people with a delightfully diverse mixture of church, cultural, and regional backgrounds. Our worship is spirited, we are serious about serving, and we don't back off having a good time together. At KMLC we truly celebrate life!

We would love to be your church home. Kure Memorial is located at 117 N. 3rd Ave. in Kure Beach, just behind Big Daddy's Seafood Restaurant and across the street from the Kure Town Center. On Sunday's we meet at 9 AM for Christian education for all ages, at 10 AM for worship, and at 11 AM for fellowship, fun, and sending out to serve.

For more information, contact the Rev. Dr. Richard Graf, our pastor, at 910-458-9586, email rbgraf@gmail.com, call the church at 910-458-5266, or email kurememorial@charternet.com.

Fort Fisher Ferry to undergo Repairs & Maintenance

As of December 1st, 2008, the Southport - Fort Fisher Ferry will suspend it services for approximately 2 months while T.A. Loving Co. contracting company rehabilitates ramps at both ends of the route.

This will no doubt be an inconvenience to the hundreds of regular commuters who use the ferry to travel between southern New Hanover County and Brunswick County. Pleasure Island residents will have to travel north over the Snow's Cut Bridge through New Hanover County and enter Brunswick County via the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge or the Isabel Holmes Bridge during the two months of work on the ferry.

Commuters who hold annual passes will have their passes extended two months after the work is completed.

The nature of the work is routine maintenance to avoid any problems down the road. The DOT chose December and January to do the work because those are traditionally the slowest months on the Fort Fisher ferry.

Will affect your commute? Please leave a comment to let us know how you plan to work around this transportation issue.

Kure Beach Votes "No" to Proposed Bike Path Location

The Star-News reported today that the Kure Beach Town Council voted to oppose the Pleasure Island Greenway project. While the council does support an Island-wide bike path, they did not think the proposed location was in the best interest of the town's residents.

Many Kure Beach residents expressed to the council members their concern about noise and safety issues with having a public bike path running so close to their homes. The town council voted according to those concerns.

The Pleasure Island Greenway Committee was hoping to create the bike path on a separate route away from the road out of concern for biker and pedestrian safety. With this opposition from the Town of Kure Beach, they will have to come up with an alternate route through this part of the island.

Council members and residents who opposed the bike path proposal say they are willing to work with the committe to come up with an alternate route.

Do you live in Kure Beach? If so, what are your thoughts on this vote and on the Pleasure Island Greenway?

Star-News Editorial About Pleasure Island Greenway

The Star-News Editorial column today in the Opinions section discusses the editorial staff's view on the Pleasure Island Greenway Project.

The editors are proponents of creating a bike path that runs the length of Pleasure Island, from Snow's Cut boat ramp to Fort Fisher. The positives outweigh the negatives, in their opinion, and the benefits include:
  1. Exercise
  2. Neighborliness
  3. Bringing people together
  4. Positive attraction for visitors
  5. Saving money on gas by walking or biking instead of driving
Given these benefits, the editors agree that there needs to be a compromise to make sure resident's concerns are addressed but that the pedestrian and bike path should not be shelved completely because of these objections.

What do you think? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Pleasure Island Greenway Location

The front-page headline in today's Star-News reads "Pleasure Island split on bike-trail location." The story discusses the response of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach citizens to a planned bike trail between Snow's Cut and Fort Fisher.

At issue is the location of the bike path, or Pleasure Island Greenway. Most residents agree that a bike path spanning the island would be an asset for residents and visitors alike.

In August, New Hanover County called a public meeting to solicit input on plans to develop the Pleasure Island Bike and Pedestrian Greenway, a multi-use paved path from the Snow's Cut boat ramp in Carolina Beach to the Fort Fisher Historic Site, south of Kure Beach. From the news release calling the meeting:
"The proposal calls for a 12-foot wide paved path that would extend over most of the existing fire break separating the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach from property owned by the federal government, including the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area. The greenway would provide a safe and green alternative for travelling around Pleasure Island."
The Star-News reports that hundreds of residents turned out to discuss the proposal and a number of them were opposed to using the fire break for a public access path. The reasons they listed included:
  1. Concerns about crime and noise
  2. Safety
  3. Security
  4. Police and fire protection in that area
  5. Trash pickup
  6. General maintenance
Opponents to the proposed location suggested using Dow Road instead while planners with the Pleasure Island Greenway Committee felt that Dow Road was too far away from the downtown areas of the beach towns. They want to encourage inclusion and accessibility to help foster a sense of community in these beach towns and make connections with the people and places of Pleasure Island.

Greenway planners are open-minded about finding the right location for the bike path and will continue to listen to residents to try and find the right solution.

Pleasure Island Chamber Hosts SEO / Adwords Workshop

The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is holding a Search Engine Optimization and Google Adwords seminar on September 17, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:30pm at the Carolina Beach Town Hall Police Training Room.

The focus of this seminar is online marketing for your Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, or Wilmington, NC business. If your business has a website or if you're thinking about starting a website for your company, then this seminar is for you. It's not enough to just have a website. To really get your money's worth, you need to market your website so that people can find it and use it.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) involves website design and creating content for your site so that the search engines (like Google, Yahoo, etc) understand what it is about and recognize it as a relevant and important resource for your targeted search terms. If you can get your website to appear on the first page of Google results for a given search term, then you're likely to get more organic traffic to your site and ideally more business leads.

For instance, if you sell and install hurricane shutters in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, then you want your website to turn up on the first page of results for the search term "hurricane shutters carolina beach nc." Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) are the tools to help you get those results.

The seminar will cover:
  • Basics of Google Adwords Advertising Program
  • Writing effective ads
  • Tracking your success
  • SEO basics
  • How to build traffic through inbound links
  • Intro to Google Webmaster Tools
You can sign up for this seminar by visiting the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce Website and sending an email or calling the number listed on the contact info.
