The Star-News reported today that the Kure Beach Town Council voted to oppose the Pleasure Island Greenway project. While the council does support an Island-wide bike path, they did not think the proposed location was in the best interest of the town's residents.
Many Kure Beach residents expressed to the council members their concern about noise and safety issues with having a public bike path running so close to their homes. The town council voted according to those concerns.
The Pleasure Island Greenway Committee was hoping to create the bike path on a separate route away from the road out of concern for biker and pedestrian safety. With this opposition from the Town of Kure Beach, they will have to come up with an alternate route through this part of the island.
Council members and residents who opposed the bike path proposal say they are willing to work with the committe to come up with an alternate route.
Do you live in Kure Beach? If so, what are your thoughts on this vote and on the Pleasure Island Greenway?

Pleasure Island Chamber offers Small Business Seminars
One of the benefits of membership in the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce is access to seminars and workshops for small businesses hosted by the Chamber. The Chamber is dedicated to helping local businesses thrive. In offering these seminars, they are able to help educate business owners on a variety of topics from licensing to marketing. Business owners from Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Monkey Junction, Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and beyond are invited - members and non-members alike.
The seminars cost $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Registration is required and you can sign up using the form that comes in your monthly newsletter or by emailing Visitor@PleasureIslandNC.org. Sandwiches or pizza, soft drinks and water are provided.
Just last night, there was a great seminar held in the Carolina Beach Town Hall Building called "Supercharge Your Website" where presenter Andrew Grey, an internet marketing professional, discussed strategies for making your website visible to people searching out your products or services online. He taught the why's and how's of using Google Adwords, Search Engine Optimization, and website tracking using free programs such as Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools.
There was a great turnout for this seminar and we're sure everyone went home with some new goals and resources for supercharging their own website.
Be on the lookout for the October newsletter with information about any upcoming small business seminars.
Thanks!

Pleasure Island Greenway Location
The front-page headline in today's Star-News reads "Pleasure Island split on bike-trail location." The story discusses the response of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach citizens to a planned bike trail between Snow's Cut and Fort Fisher.
At issue is the location of the bike path, or Pleasure Island Greenway. Most residents agree that a bike path spanning the island would be an asset for residents and visitors alike.
In August, New Hanover County called a public meeting to solicit input on plans to develop the Pleasure Island Bike and Pedestrian Greenway, a multi-use paved path from the Snow's Cut boat ramp in Carolina Beach to the Fort Fisher Historic Site, south of Kure Beach. From the news release calling the meeting:
Greenway planners are open-minded about finding the right location for the bike path and will continue to listen to residents to try and find the right solution.

From the news release calling the meeting:
"The proposal calls for a 12-foot wide paved path that would extend over most of the existing fire break separating the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach from property owned by the federal government, including the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area. The greenway would provide a safe and green alternative for travelling around Pleasure Island."The Star-News reports that hundreds of residents turned out to discuss the proposal and a number of them were opposed to using the fire break for a public access path. The reasons they listed included:
- Concerns about crime and noise
- Safety
- Security
- Police and fire protection in that area
- Trash pickup
- General maintenance
Greenway planners are open-minded about finding the right location for the bike path and will continue to listen to residents to try and find the right solution.
