Each year chefs from restaurants of Pleasure Island, Monkey Junction, Wilmington and beyond gather on Pleasure Island for our famous Chowder Cook-off.

Your job is to bring the family & your appetite, sample each contestant’s wares and vote on the Best Chowder. In addition to serving up the area's best chowder, this daylong event includes live music and the Kidz Zone which will have face painting and a 3 in 1 inflatable house. There will also be hotdogs, funnel cakes, soft drinks and beer and wine for sale. (No coolers, no pets please!)

Good Hops Brewery Coming to Carolina Beach, NC

A new business is coming soon to Carolina Beach. Good Hops Brewing, the first brewery on Pleasure Island, is slated to open in April 2014. On Tuesday, February 11, 2014, The Carolina Beach Town Council unanimously approved Breweries within the City Limits, clearing the way for Good Hops Brewing to take its place as a Pleasure Island hot spot.

Spotlight on Business: TipTop Frame

TipTop Frame is a custom picture framing business located at the Federal Point Plaza just down from the Primrose Cottage. I (Skip Sprague) have been framing peoples cherished pieces for over 20 years and plan on another 20 to come!

I am experienced in most all aspects of conservation and handling of artworks, with a very good eye for color. I do framing from jigsaw puzzles to the most prized finger painting of your child's to the very collectible memorabilia. Shadow-boxes to stretching to needlework and drymounting. I cut glass for frames, replace broken glass, change out the mats on existing pieces. I am now creating budget conscious readymades from stock mats and moldings just for the artists.

TipTop frames is looking to become a trusted member of the community of Carolina Beach in which I can use my talents and business to also do my part in supporting our lifestyles in such a wonderful area.

Spotlight on Business: Good Shepherd Center

The mission of Good Shepherd Center is to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and foster transition to housing. For more than 30 years, Good Shepherd has helped men, women and families in crisis through a Soup Kitchen serving 85,000 meals a year; a Day Shelter and a Night Shelter with access to showers, restrooms, telephones and clean clothing; an onsite Medical Clinic in partnership with the NHC Health Department; Second Helpings program redistributing up to 500 tons of salvaged food each year; and a rehousing program that helps individuals and families get back into their own home. In addition, just a few blocks away the Sgt. Eugene Ashley Center offers both a transitional home and a permanent, supportive home for veterans with a history of substance abuse. Good Shepherd relies on the generosity of more than 300 weekly volunteers and the numerous donations of food and funds from the community.

Upcoming events to benefit Good Shepherd include Empty Bowls on March 14th at the First Baptist Church Activities Center on Independence Blvd. You will enjoy a luncheon of homemade soups and breads provided by local restaurants, with each guest receiving a hand-crafted pottery bowl by local artists. Proceeds benefit Good Shepherd Center and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.

Good Shepherd’s 11th Annual Landfall Golf Tournament will be held on April 7th. This fundraiser attracts both golfers and businesses and sup-ports Good Shepherd’s programs and services.
