Summer Movie Lineup!

The schedule of Movies at the Lake has been released for the summer of 2015!

Sunday evenings throughout the summer the Carolina Beach Lake is the place to be. Each week an entertaining and family friendly feature is shown on the giant inflatable screen. Sit outside under the stars, enjoying some quality time with family and friends, and the sound of the ocean just a couple of blocks away.

There's something for everyone among the outdoor movie selections for 2015. Kids will find new hits and sequels to some of their favorites, and grown ups can reminisce with remakes of classics from their own childhoods as well as share a few originals with the next generation. 

Concessions are available for purchase or you can bring a picnic. Bring beach chairs or a blanket, sit back, and enjoy the show! 

Movies start at 8:45. Arrive early for the best seating!

The United States Power Squadrons®, America’s Boating Clubsm, is the largest organization in the world devoted to boating safety, education, and camaraderie. If you are a boating enthusiast, or want to be, this is the organization for YOU!

The organization was founded in 1914 and has grown to be approximately 40,000 strong. It is not a government organization, but close ties are maintained with the United States Coast Guard and State boating agencies. The only requirements for membership are a keen interest in boating-related activities and an eagerness to meet like minded people.

The Cape Fear Sail & Power Squadron®, Cape Fear Boating Club, covers the greater Wilmington area. The real value of membership is increasing your boating knowledge through education, off and on the water. We provide basic boating education and offer advanced courses as a civic service to the general public.

We also have events and meetings that give members a chance to relate to and participate in our favorite pastime of boating. You can participate in cruises with large, medium, and small boats. Additionally, you will be able to take advantage of many special benefits and discounts on a wide range of products, services, and boating insurance.

Another public service activity is our Vessel Safety Check to examine boats for required equipment and award a Coast Guard-recognized compliance decal to vessels that pass the inspection. As a civic service, we also cooperate with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to update nautical charts of the area, and support boater safety programs in public schools. We also issue the Maritime Mobile Service Identity for your VHF radio with DSC.

BBQ Cook Off March 7, 2015

Are you ready to taste some truly amazing barbecue? Do you have what it takes to separate the best from the rest? Then come on down to the Carolina Beach Lake on March 7th for the Step up for Soldiers Back Yard BBQ Cook-Off!

This fun event pits the area's top barbecue enthusiasts against each other in a head to head competition all in support of a great organization. Contestants bring their secret spices, rubs, and sauces and cook overnight to be ready to present their BBQ to the judges and attendees the next day. Purchase tickets to taste the entries and cast your vote for best BBQ!

Smoke Alarm Installation Rally - Carolina Beach

Did you know? Seven times a day someone dies in a home fire in the United States. A staggering 60% of all fire fatalities occurred in a home that did not have a working smoke alarm!

You can save a life on Saturday, February 28, 2015 by joining American Red Cross volunteers, the Carolina Beach Fire Department and your neighbors as we go door-to-door to install 100-150 smoke alarms in select neighborhoods in Carolina Beach.

In teams of 4, volunteers will disperse into targeted neighborhoods to install smoke alarms, educate residents on fire safety, and document installations for grant reporting purposes.

Spotlight on Business: Pleasure Island Day of Hope

Pleasure Island Day of Hope, Inc. is a non-profit 501c3 whose mission is to bring cancer awareness to the Community while raising funds that will help our family, friends and neighbors who are going through their cancer journey.

In 2015 we will be having our “Toes in the Sand” Beach walk on September 26th. This will be our 3rd Annual event and is a stroll on the beach with all proceeds used to support our Community residents with any cancers, who need financial assistance. In addition, we help NHRMC Pink Ribbon Project provide mammography screening and diagnostic testing for breast cancer.

We are also in the planning stages for a Survivor/Caregiver group which we are looking to begin the 2nd quarter of 2015. This group will focus on wellness issues and invite speakers who will provide information on the survivors’ cancer journey and the role of the caregiver during that time. Also, complimentary treatments will be highlighted which will be beneficial to both the survivor and caregiver (ie: acupuncture, massage, exercise, etc.).

In 2014 we introduced our “Day of Hope Necklace” as a fundraiser and they are available throughout the year. Necklaces are available by contacting us via our website or visiting Touché Ladies Fashions in Carolina Beach.

Special Olympics Annual Polar Plunge

Special Olympics NHC provides year round sports training, competition, social events and Camp Shriver summer camp for people eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities.We invite you to join us in the Annual Polar Plunge 5k. Participants are encouraged to dress up for their 5K, which winds through Kure Beach and ends in the sand!

About the Cause
In New Hanover County, over 600 athletes participate in Special Olympics. Our program receives no government funding and relies solely on private and corporate support as well as the efforts of over 300 volunteers to provide these services at no cost to the athletes or their families. Run for a cause on a perfectly measured 5K course open to all ages and skill levels. 

5k runners and 1 mile fun walkers are not required to plunge but are encouraged to heat up with the run/walk and cool down with the polar plunge. Find your inner super hero! Teams or individuals can dress in costume to add to the fun. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.
