PRESS RELEASE: BLUEGRASS RETURNS TO PLEASURE ISLAND

THE 1ST ANNUAL PLEASURE ISLAND BLUEGRASS BY THE RIVER

Kure Beach, NC – Bluegrass is Back on Pleasure Island.  The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce presents the 1st Annual Bluegrass By The River on May 12th at the Ft. Fisher Air Force Recreation Area.  After being away for a few years, the folks at the Chamber decided it was time to bring this Family-friendly event back to its home – Pleasure Island!

This year will feature a variety of bluegrass music with five of the best bands in the southeast.  Starting out the afternoon will be local favorites South of K from Kure Beach, NC. with their traditional and inspiring bluegrass selections.  To mix it up just a little, we are bringing you The Mystery Hillbillies from Winston-Salem with their special renditions of bluegrass standards as well as some Patsy Cline and a little rock-a-billy to boot.  For our third band, we welcome the Donna Hughes Band from the Triad area.  Donna is an award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist that has written for and recorded with some of the best in bluegrass (Allison Krauss to name one).  Ted Jones and the Tarheel Boys will be back for their 3rd Pleasure Island Festival and  bring their gospel-inspired, traditional bluegrass renditions to our stage all the way from Smithfield, NC.  Rounding out the evening, we are proud to present the hot, young group from the hills of Harlan County, Kentucky – Cumberland River.  Their hit song “Justified” can be heard on the television show of the same name on the FX channel.

In addition to the great music on the stage, we encourage musicians to bring their instruments and voices to participate in the Open Jam that will be going on all day at the Beach House (inside and outside on the deck).  We will also have clogging demonstrations, antique tractor exhibitions as well as mule rides for the kids…we might even have a wash-tub bass exhibit or maybe some moonshine to sample.

The amazing FREE Kidzone will be back with face painting, educational exhibits and inflatables and much more!  You can also get a little shopping in at the many and varied vendors as well as having a glass of wine or a bottle of beer.  The Food selection this year is outstandig as well.  Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar from Carolina Beach will be serving up delectable peel-n-eat shrimp, while the folks at Miracle Temple Farms will be providing Ribs, BBQ, Turkey Drumsticks and more.  Of course it would not be a festival without the fine culinary selections from Greek Boys or the fried pickles, funnel cakes and Sweet Tea from N.C. Sweet Tea.  We will also have Gourmet Popcorn from David’s Karolina Kettle Corn as well as the Kona-Ice Entertainment Vehicle serving up everyone’s favorite frozen creations.

Tickets are just $10.00 in advance or can be purchased at the door for $15.00 for this one day event.  Tickets are available on-line at www.EventBrite.com or at many local establishments. Kids 12 and under are free.  Gates open at 11:30 am. We ask that you do not bring coolers or pets, but bring your chairs, towels and blankets for a Pleasure Island style shindig!  Remember, Pickin’ and Grinnin’ are encouraged.  See you there!
