Artists Draw Beauty from Nature at N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher

Come take "A Walk in the Woods" and explore colorful art at the N. C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
The newest installation in the Aquarium's Spadefish Gallery, entitled "A Walk in the Woods: North Carolina's Maritime Forests," showcases the artistry of the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA). On display from now to March 1, the creative works celebrate the rich animal and plant diversity of maritime forests along our coast.
These unique ecosystems have adapted to the effects of salt spray and wind because of their proximity to the ocean. Each of North Carolina's maritime forests is slightly different from the next and provides habitat for migrating and resident wildlife and a great array of plant species.
All pieces in the show are original and while other medium, such as watercolor or pastels, can be used, these pieces are at least 75 percent colored pencil.  Fine art colored pencils offer color intensity, depth and the ability to create fine detail ideal for illustrations, representational art, nature paintings and portraits.
The Spadefish Gallery at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher showcases artists throughout the year. Artwork that coincides with the Aquarium's mission of "Inspiring Appreciation and Conservation of North Carolina's Aquatic Environment" is located on the second floor of the Marine building, near the auditorium.
The Raleigh-Durham chapter of CPSA has a mission to support artists throughout the Carolinas.  For more information, visit the Colored Pencil Society of America website atwww.CPSA.org.

Step Up For Soldiers Backyard BBQ Cook-Off - January 28, 2012

Where the BBQ Meets the Beach
Carolina Beach, NC - On Saturday, January 28, 2012 twenty-five teams will take to their grills, forks in hand, secret recipes folded and stashed in pockets, all for the glory of the title and the satisfaction of knowing they've helped to raise a significant amount of money for Step Up For Soldiers.

The competition will start with a level playing field: everyone will have the same meats, be in the same location and have the same time constraints. But thrown into the mix will be individual rubs, sauces or marinades, grill temperatures and methods of cooking that will leave someone going home with braggin' rights for the next year.
The cook-off will be held at the lake in Carolina Beach at the junction of Lake Park Blvd. and Atlanta Avenue and everyone is welcome. Admission is free. Tickets can be purchased to sample the BBQs after the double-blind judging is completed. There will be music, raffles, arts and craft vendors and additional food and drink for purchase. Gates open at 11:00am and prizes will be awarded at 2:00pm. And all to benefit Step Up For Soldiers.
Step Up For Soldiers is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of our disabled veterans and their families. Step Up For Soldiers was started in November 2004 by Tom Russell, a retired Port Authority police officer and Vietnam Vet. His intent was to assist wounded soldiers who were sent overseas in response to the 9/11 terrorist attack and he began with building wheelchair ramps for two soldiers who returned home paralyzed from the waist down. The organization has increased from a single person to a small family of nine dedicated volunteers and continues to develop as it grows. Russell's goal is to help as many families of active and non-active duty soldiers as possible in the Fort Bragg to Camp Lejeune areas by modifying homes and providing other services to veteran and active duty soldiers.
There is no better way to spend the day than tasting the best BBQ around, maybe eating some oysters or a burger, listening to great music and browsing through the goods from the arts and craft vendors while helping support such a deserving organization.
To volunteer during the event contact Kevin Holton at kwholton@gmail.com or call 919-274-8617. For more information contact Rose McConville at rosemc110@gmail.com or call 910-547-0087.

Recycle Those Halloween Costumes at the NC Aquarium at Ft Fisher

Costumes and candy make for a sweet Halloween. Afterward, however, the clutter and litter haunt closets and landfills for years.
Wrap up this spooky season with the help of the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Pass along the fun of a special outfit, remove unwanted items from your home and recycle. Donate gently-used costumes and empty candy wrappers to the Aquarium as part of our Green Halloween initiative.
The Aquarium will collect those ninja suits, princess dresses and all other spooky get-ups Nov. 1-30. Next fall, families can select new costumes from the donated items as part of a free costume exchange.
This initiative continues the Aquarium's work with Green Halloween, a community initiative focused on creating child- and Earth-friendly holiday traditions.
Another Halloween tradition, candy consumption, produces a scary amount of waste, with the potential to litter our waterways and oceans. Instead of trashing the empty wrappers, save them and drop them off at the Aquarium.
The Aquarium collects empty wrappers throughout the year and sends them to a recycling partner, TerraCycle, as part of our focus on conservation. TerraCycle creates recycling systems for hard-to-recycle waste, turning trash to treasure in the form of new products like park benches and backpacks. This partnership raises money for conservation efforts at the Aquarium.

The Beat is 12,000 readers strong with over 50,000 web page hits per month and growing. The magazine is distributed to over eighty locations in Wilmington, Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach.

Trick or Treat Under The Sea at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher will host its popular pre-Halloween "Trick-or-Treat Under the Sea" on two evenings again this year. The aquatically-themed festival will be held at the Aquarium from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 26, and Thurs., Oct. 27.

Now in its 10th year, Trick-or-Treat Under the Sea offers fun for the whole family.  Dress up in costume (no masks for adults, please) and check out what all the other goblins are wearing. Scoop up candy and prizes, play Halloween-themed games, and treat yourself to face-painting and fortune-telling. Two magic shows are offered each night by No Sleeves Magic Camp. There will be spooky divers in the big tank again this year, and two sets of haunted gardens - one for the very brave, and another for the more cautious.

The Aquarium's classrooms will be rigged for games and prizes, with "scary" deep-sea creatures to hand out treats.

Local merchants, costumed for the event, will distribute prizes and coupons to trick-or-treaters. At the start of each evening, judges will award prizes to the merchant BOOth crews with the most imaginative costumes and eco-friendly booth décor. UNCW's Sammy the Seahawk, the Chic-Fil-A Cow and the Wilmington Sharks mascot will strut their stuff and greet the little ones.

The fun begins early for visitors on the plaza, with fencingskeleton demonstrations and live animal encounters around the Spadefish Fountain. The Shark Bites snack bar will be open on the outdoor deck both nights. And throughout the evening, two radio-controlled "Air Swimmers" - a shark and a clownfish - will cruise above visitors' heads.

Tickets are $6 each, and children 2 and younger are free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.ncaquariums.com or at the door the night of the event. Please note:  Umbrella strollers only. Children 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Be green and bring your own trick-or-treat bag.

Spotlight on Business - Port City Executive

For over 10 years now, The Port City Executive has been providing businesses throughout the Wilmington area the opportunity to reach employees of companies in all areas of New Hanover County. The PCE is a valued advertising medium that after a decade of delivery, has grown to be expected and anticipated each quarter by business executives and employees throughout the area.

Imagine having information about your company and its‟ services be considered an Employee Benefit.
Imagine Human Resources of large local corporations considering your company's message important enough to be approved for all employees. That is exactly the unique advantage your company has as an advertiser in the Port City Executive!

15,000 copies of The PCE are delivered personally by a knowledgeable PCE employee (not a delivery
service) straight into the hands of area businesses, for direct distribution to their employees. This is greatly different from other advertising publications that are either bulk-mailed or mass-delivered to common areas in supermarkets, restaurants and waiting rooms. Think of it… PCE readers are educated, employed, have disposable incomes and could have a need for your business or services in both their professional life and at home!

We invite you to visit our home at Pacifica Senior Living Wilmington and experience the warm and friendly atmosphere. We look forward to speaking with you soon.

There's still time to enjoy a Britt's Donut...

But don't worry - the little shop on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk will be open a few more weeks with reduced hours. Britt's will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the month of September.

Spotlight on Business - Carolina Beach Community Acupuncture

Open the doors to 5 beautifully colored panels, soothing music, a quiet, relaxing, healing atmosphere and comfortable reclining chairs and you are at Carolina Beach Community Acupuncture. For many people Acupuncture is an intriguing form of medicine which they know very little about. In fact, most people are unaware that Chinese Medicine is a complete form of medicine with scientific basis and amazing clinical results.

Along with it's effectiveness in treating pain, acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used to treat both internal (IBS, PTSD, Acid Reflux, Migraines, Colds, Flus) and external (muscle sprains, strains, chronic pain, RSD, back pain, neck pain) diseases. Along with the acupuncture, CBCA offers 7 yoga classes weekly with 3 donation based "Pay What You Can" classes and a Massage therapist to round out the complete Health clinic.

Although there are a couple types of practitioners who are Certified to perform acupuncture Carolina Beach is lucky to have Jeremy Linquist L.Ac., a Licensed Acupuncturist who is fully trained in all aspects of Chinese Medicine. Graduating the 4 year medical program at the top of his class from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, CA, Jeremy furthered his studies working rotations at the Chengdu University Hospital of TCM in Chengdu, China. His passion for medicine led him to open the only full time Community Acupuncture Clinic in New Hanover County.

Open 5 days a week, Carolina Beach Community Acupuncture or CBCA as the locals call it, provides acupuncture treatments on a sliding scale of $20-$40 allowing the patient to determine what they can afford to pay for treatment. "Our number one priority is getting people better at a price they can feel good about." says Jeremy.

Acupuncture is a process much like exercising. It is very rare for one treatment to resolve a problem and in our fast pace, "Magic Pill" society, hiding the symptoms is what many people consider a treatment. This is not the case at CBCA. The treatments provide relief for many types of pain and disease but the course of treatment and type of treatment varies from person to person. "We treat people, not symptoms. Our
treatments are designed to get rid of the cause of the disease not just hide the pain so
that it does not return later on in life."

Hurricane Irene - Pleasure Island, NC

Photo by local real estate agent, Wendy Fincher-Hughes.
We are thankful that Pleasure Island was spared the worst of Hurricane Irene. After the storm moved on we were left with a breathtaking sunset on Saturday night and a bright, sunny beach day (or yard cleanup day) on Sunday.

Our thoughts are with those all along the coast who suffered damage and losses during the storm.
