In Case You Missed It - Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off is CANCELLED

The 21st Annual Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off is officially CANCELLED.
In case you haven't heard the news, the Pleasure Island Chowder Cook-Off, originally scheduled for April 8, 2017, has officially been cancelled. It is with a sense of pride, remembrance and sorrow that we announce the end of this signature spring event after 20 great years.

The Chowder Cook-Off celebrated delicious area food, great music and fun for the entire family. Chefs from southeast North Carolina's finest restaurants each brought their own unique chowder recipes - seafood or otherwise - and invited guests to sample and judge the selections. Attendees were able to sample a true taste of Cape Fear during this friendly chowder competition, held each spring at Carolina Beach Lake Park in Carolina Beach. Kids were able to play in the park's playground and the Kidz Zone, with face painting, a giant inflatable slide, laser tag and more. The sounds of live music filled the air all day as the children played and the grownups enjoyed a few adult beverages along with scrumptious chowder.

Although the event was much loved by the local community, after careful consideration, the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors decided to officially end the annual event. Unfortunately, the Chowder Cook-Off became a victim of the increasingly high cost of seafood, lack of restaurant participation and the growing complexities of outdoor events.

The Board will be meeting very soon with the assistance of the local restaurant community to determine a future culinary-based event (or events) to showcase our area's restaurants and food purveyors.

In the meantime, the 2017 season will not be without fun events, great food and lively music! The first ever Spring Pleasure Island Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival will be held at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area on Sunday, April 23, with 12 great bands on two stages with plenty of seafood, face-painting, laser-tag, crafters, artists, beer and wine, and fun for all ages. This inaugural Spring event will feature headliners Jonny Lang and Samantha Fish along with ten other bands overlooking the banks of the might Cape Fear River in Kure Beach, NC.

For more information, please feel free to contact the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce at (910) 458-8434.

Family Friendly Activities on Pleasure Island

Pleasure Island, NC is where family memories are made.  There are so many great ways to enjoy time together with the kids, you’ll never run out of fun things to do.  When it’s time to venture off the beach, check out some of these ideas for activities sure to keep everyone in the family happy and entertained.

Carolina Beach State Park

Kids will find endless ways to explore at this beautiful state park located just a few minutes’ drive from the beach.  A family picnic under the shade of big oak trees provides a cool respite from the sun’s rays. The picnic area situated near the banks of Snow’s Cut offers tables, grills, wheelchair-accessible sites and restrooms nearby.

Once tummies are full, stretch your legs on one of the park’s nature trails.  Both kids and grown-ups will delight in the wide variety of plant and animal life found on these easy-to-traverse-trails. The Flytrap Trail is a favorite as hikers try to spot the rare Venus flytrap and native orchids that grow wild here.  Other trails meander along the waters of the Cape Fear River and Snow’s Cut and offer glimpses of shore birds and fiddler crabs scurrying along the mudflats.

Kayaking, fishing and camping are also available at Carolina Beach State Park.  Be sure to stop in the Visitor’s Center where interactive exhibits provide a fun and educational look at the region’s diverse ecosystem.  For more, visit http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/cabe/main.php

NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher

This must-see attraction has families coming back year after year, as new exhibits and programs are added on a regular basis.  Brand new this year is Lorikeet Landing, where kids can observe these colorful tropical birds up close and feed them from tiny nectar cups.  Of course, the fish are the stars here, and children delight in the touch tank full of friendly creatures like rays, urchins and sea stars.  Also, be sure to plan your visit in time for one of the many daily feedings of the sharks and other marine animals, and interact with the scuba divers as they go about their chores in the giant 235,000 gallon Cape Fear Shoals tank.  For tickets, hours of operation and a complete list of daily programs visit http://www.ncaquariums.com/fort-fisher.

Tony Silvagni Surf School

Get “on board” with top-notch lessons guaranteed to have kids and adults of all fitness levels riding the waves – it’s a great way to get the whole family involved in an exciting new experience on the water.  Learn how to surf or paddleboard in a safe and friendly atmosphere.  Surf School offers individual and group lessons, and hosts private surf parties for large family gatherings.  Stand up paddleboard instruction is offered on the calm, sheltered waters of the Intracoastal Waterway.  If you’d rather hit the waves on your own, Surf School offers rentals of body boards, kayaks, surfboards and skim boards.  Get all the details at www.surfschoolnc.com.

Sunday Night Movies at the Lake

When everyone is tuckered out after a big day of exploring Pleasure Island, the whole family will relish the chance to plunk down on the lawn at Carolina Beach Lake Park on Sunday evenings and enjoy a free movie on the giant outdoor screen.  The movies are family friendly, and everyone can refuel with a variety of reasonably-priced concession snacks.   Movies in the Park is held each Sunday from May through September.  Find out what’s playing by visiting the Events page of our website, http://www.pleasureislandnc.org/events.php.

Story Time by the Sea

This is another great way to let the kids wind down a bit after non-stop activity.  Held at the beautifully renovated Kure Beach Ocean Front Park, children will enjoy stories, crafts and games and can even have their picture taken with a storybook princess.  Parents can take a little break, too, and take in the ocean breezes on one of the relaxing swinging benches. Story Time by the Sea is free of charge, and is held on Wednesdays from 10am – 11:30pm through August.

Kure Beach, NC – The air is crisp, the nights are cool and the sky is blue – Welcome to Pleasure Island in the Fall. And there is no better way to bring in Autumn than to attend the 22nd Annual Pleasure Island Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival on October 10 th & 11th. This years’ Festival brings a beavy of unique talent to the twenty-one year history of this great Festival. Again, we are bringing you DOUBLE HEADLINERS - International renowned artists will headline on Saturday and Sunday.

First up is the legendary DR. JOHN & THE NITE TRIPPERS on Saturday night, October 10 th . With 6 Grammy Awards and a 2011 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Dr. John will bring his unique fusion of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues and classic funk to the shores of Pleasure Island. Best known for his hit “Right Place Wrong Time”, the gravely voiced American singer-songwriter and pianist is known to combine blues, pop, jazz as well as zydeco, boogie-woogie and rock & roll.

The original Dr. John was a voodoo practitioner from New Orleans (by way of Haiti) who was known as a medicinal and spiritual healer. Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack adopted this persona in the early 60’s along with a Mardi Gras inspired theatrical stage show complete with elaborate costumes and voodoo ceremonies. Dr. John has recorded with The Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Derek Trucks and many others.

Closing out the Festival on Sunday, October 11 th , the “Queen of the Blues” - SHEMEKIA COPELAND will return to the Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival by popular demand following her drop dead performance at last year’s showl. Shemekia is a two-time Grammy nominee who has opened for The Rolling Stones, shared the stage with Buddy Guy, B. B. King and Eric Clapton, performed at the White House and is the daughter of Texas blues guitarist and singer Johnny Copeland. With roots in North Carolina, Harlem, Chicago and Texas, Shemekia is a force to be reckoned with her huge, blast-furnace voice and in today’s Blues musical scene.

In support of the outstanding talent offered up by DR. JOHN & THE NITE TRIPPERS and SHEMEKIA COPELAND, the Festival will also offer other national recording acts including:

  • Opening for DR. JOHN will be KARA GRAINGER – Kara is an Australlian currently living in LA who is an undeniably strong vocalist, fiery slide guitarist and a heartfelt songwriter. Kara has traveled the world with her unique style and has opened for Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal and Jonny Lang (to name a few).
  • Opening for SHEMEKIA COPELAND, we are very excited to bring you the red-hot Texas rockin’ blues of SMOKIN’ JOE KUBEK AND BNOIS KING who have been thrilling music fans for over 20 years with their raucous roadhouse blues, fiery guitar licks and soulful vocals. This unique duo has shared the stage with legendary artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Freddie King and B.B. King.

In Addition to these four, there will be ten other blues and jazz groups on two stages over the two-day festival brought to you by the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce at the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area, along with Bryant Real Estate and Jeff Gordon Chevrolet.

The Food selection, as always, will be outstanding as well with the best of the best presenting their culinary wares for your enjoyment. The amazing FREE Kidzone will be back with magicians, face painting, laser tag, educational exhibits and inflatables and much more! You can also get a little shopping in at the many and varied vendors as well as having a glass of wine or a bottle of beer.

Tickets are just $50.00 in advance for a two-day pass or can be purchased at the door for $60.00 for Saturday (DR. JOHN & THE NITE TRIPPERS play Saturday night) and $25.00 for Sunday (SHEMEKIA COPELAND is the Sunday closer). Kids 12 and under are free.
