2017 Special Olympics Polar Plunge

The 13th Annual Special Olympics Polar Plunge, 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk (aka the 5K Run-N-Plunge) will take place in Kure Beach on Saturday, February 11, 2017. This fun, family-friendly event encourages contestants to brave the cold conditions of the Atlantic Ocean by plunging into the shore after completing a 5K (or 1 Mile Walk) that winds through the beach.

Contestants are also encouraged to come to the event dressed as their favorite super hero, with an awards given for the day's Costume Contest. And did we mention this event is dog-friendly? In fact, there will be a special "Pooch Plunge" just for brave Plungers who want their canine companions to participate, too!

Contestants can opt for the 5K Run-N-Plunge, the 1 Mile Fun Walk or just the plunge. No matter what you choose to do, you're sure to have a great time supporting the Special Olympics of New Hanover County!

Race into Spring on Pleasure Island!

Cold weather got you down? Have you already fallen behind on those New Year’s goals to get in shape? Best of all, these activities will get you through those dark winter days and in perfect shape for summer! Here’s what you have to look forward to:


12th Annual Polar Plunge - Saturday, February 13th
Make like a polar bear and take a refreshing wintertime dip in the invigorating waters of the mighty Atlantic! A number of other activities will be on tap to coincide with this frosty fun including live music, a silent auction and the always popular costume contest. With the plunge set for 3:00 in the afternoon, there are also two excellent warm up activities: a 5K and 1-Mile Walk, both at 1:30 pm. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk will serve as the official event hub. Of course, you will be “Freezin for a Reason," as all proceeds benefit New Hanover County Special Olympics. 12th Annual Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Carolina Beach

Are you brave enough to face the frigid waters of Carolina Beach in February? If so, you could help raise money and awareness for a very good cause next month!

The 12th Annual Special Olympics Polar Plunge, 5K Run-N-Plunge, and 1 Mile Fun Walk takes place Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, next to the Courtyard Marriott. Contestants can choose to participate in the 5K Run-N-Plunge, a 1-mile fun walk, or just the plunge by itself.

Special Olympics NHC provides year round sports training, competition, social events and Camp Shriver summer camp for people eight years of age and older with intellectual disabilities.We invite you to join us in the Annual Polar Plunge 5k. Participants are encouraged to dress up for their 5K, which winds through Kure Beach and ends in the sand!

About the Cause
In New Hanover County, over 600 athletes participate in Special Olympics. Our program receives no government funding and relies solely on private and corporate support as well as the efforts of over 300 volunteers to provide these services at no cost to the athletes or their families. Run for a cause on a perfectly measured 5K course open to all ages and skill levels. 

5k runners and 1 mile fun walkers are not required to plunge but are encouraged to heat up with the run/walk and cool down with the polar plunge. Find your inner super hero! Teams or individuals can dress in costume to add to the fun. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

Though the main event is the plunge into the chilly waters of the Atlantic, there will also be live music, art, food, a silent auction, classic car show, the Run-N-Plunge 5K, and much more. Prefer to stay bundled up and on dry land? Come on out to enjoy the festivities and show your support for the participants!

In order to take the plunge, you must raise a minimum of $50.00 ($30 for students with proper ID) - the Polar Plunge supports the Special Olympics of New Hanover County.
