Chili Cook-Off Benefit

Step Up For Soldiers will team up with the High Tide Lounge for their annual chili cook-off again this November to raise money for Justin Crabbe. 

Justin lost both his legs and some of his fingers when his Marine Corp. unit was attacked in Afghanistan in 2010. Justin's cousin, Tom Crabbe, who lives in Carolina Beach says he his very pleased with all the support that the Crabbe family has received since the 2010 attack. Local residents have sent Justin thousands of dollars to help with his medical expenses.

A little later today the smell of delicious BBQ smoke will start wafting throughout Pleasure Island...heralding the start of the cooking that will go on throughout the night culminating in the 3rd Annual Step Up For Soldiers Backyard BBQ Cook-Off!

Many brave souls will face the unusually cold weather we're having to carefully craft their BBQ masterpieces, competing for bragging rights as the Island's top pitmasters. Whose is truly the best? Come see for yourself!

11:00 - Opening Ceremony: Wilmington Police Pipe & Drum, Star Spangled Banner by Miss Spivey's Corner, color presented by Ashley ROTC Color Guard.
BBQ Sampling Begins!

11:30 - Patriotic music by Rock Knott, Bud Light Girls on stage.

2:00 - Music by Machine Gun

4:00 - Awards Ceremony

Fire Up Your Grill for the Third Annual Step Up For Soldiers Backyard BBQ Cook-Off

On Saturday, January 25, 2014 thirty teams will take to their grills, forks in hand, secret recipes folded and stashed in pockets, all for the glory of the title and the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped to raise a significant amount of money for Step Up For Soldiers. And your team could take home that title, grill forks raised high!

The competition will start with a level playing field: everyone will have the same meats, be in the same location and have the same time constraints. But thrown into the mix will be individual rubs, sauces
or marinades, grill temperatures and methods of cooking that will leave someone going home with braggin’ rights for the next year. Registration is now open and space is limited. Register early for the best deal - $115
per team before December 20th and $150 after that date.

The cook-off will be held at the lake in Carolina Beach at the junction of Lake Park Blvd. and Atlanta Avenue. Admission is free, and tickets can be purchased to sample the BBQs after the double-blind
judging is completed. There will be three bands; The Cut opens, next is local favorite Bibis Ellison and the headliner will be Wilmington’s own Machine Gun. In addition, there will be raffles, arts and craft vendors
plus more food and drink for purchase.

Proceeds benefit Step Up For Soldiers, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of our disabled veterans and their families. This year Step Up is proud to announce a new project, “Soldier Build”, a plan to build a transitional home for veterans - along with their families - who are attending local universities. The house will be built along the lines of a Habitat for Humanity home (i.e. with hard work, sweat and determination), and Step Up For Soldiers is starting a donation program in order to supply the materials needed for the house and the overall project. Double Sprint Triathalon - June 15th

Step Up for Soldiers has partnered with the Kure Beach Fire Department to host a Double Sprint Triathlon in Kure Beach on Saturday, June 15th. The format of a double sprint triathlon consists of a 375M swim, 1.5Mi run, 20K cycle, 1.5Mi run, and another 375M swim. The cost to participate is $55 if registered by April 10th, $65 if registered between April 11th and May 31st and $75 the day of the event. There is a $10 discount for Veterans, Military, Police or Fire personnel.

Step Up For Soldiers is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of our disabled veterans and their families. Step Up For Soldiers was started in November 2004 by Tom Russell, a retired Port Authority police officer and Vietnam Vet. His intent was to assist wounded soldiers who were sent overseas in response to the 9/11 terrorist attack and he began with building wheelchair ramps for two soldiers who returned home paralyzed from the waist down. The organization has increased from a single person to a small family of nine dedicated volunteers and continues to develop as it grows. Russell's goal is to help as many families of active and non-active duty soldiers as possible in the Fort Bragg to Camp Lejeune areas by modifying homes and providing other services to veteran and active duty soldiers.

There is no better way to spend the day than tasting the best BBQ around, maybe eating some oysters or a burger, listening to great music and browsing through the goods from the arts and craft vendors while helping support such a deserving organization.
