The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the UNCW Entrepreneurship Center has selected David Pierce, owner of The Lazy Pirate in Carolina Beach and the new Carolina Beach Boatyard and Marina as the winner of the 8th Annual Pleasure Island Entrepreneur of the Year for 2014.
David Pierce will be honored at an awards breakfast held May 22nd at the UNCW Burney Center along with other Chamber winners and the 2014 Coastal Entrepreneurs of the Year.
The UNCW Entrepreneurship Center, the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, and local Chambers of Commerce organized the competition to shine a spotlight on up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the Cape Fear region and to help foster entrepreneurial activity in our region.
For over 15 years, David Pierce has brought the entrepreneur spirit to Pleasure Island. He is a true entrepreneur. David demonstrates an aggressive and focused entrepreneurial spirit because he is never at rest. He always says the project he is working on will be his last venture but he always finds a new "last" project. David's visions have always been a success for his business endeavors and Pleasure Island alike.
David is effective and efficient in the recognition and implementation of change on many levels. As our island has grown, he has changed his businesses to grow with it. An example of this is the new volleyball courts and crab shack at the Lazy Pirate. David realized the customers have become more health conscious and recreational, so he re-developed his go-cart track into volleyball courts, corn hole, grassy picnic areas, and added steamed seafood to his menu.
There is no question that the Lazy Pirate has experienced rapid and significant business growth. Just ride by almost any night! It has become one of the most popular places in town and recently won the Best Wings in Wilmington contest!
David has demonstrated innovation in all his businesses and has given Carolina Beach its own new boatyard! Carolina Beach Boatyard and Marina is David's newest vision. No longer do boaters have to leave the island to have their boats hauled out of the water. David is also planning a marine consignment shop. That is creative!
David is active in his community in many ways. He has donated to countless charities and organizations. David has always been giving to almost any cause. David started out as a volunteer firefighter for the Carolina Beach Fire Department. He has also served on the towns marketing committee and recreation department committee.
David Pierce has a proven record of accomplishment of the entrepreneurial spirit. His visions have created jobs, helped our economy and made Carolina Beach a better place for over 20 years. I do not know what is next on his list but if David's name is on it, it will be a winner!
Congratulations David!
