On Saturday, January 25, 2014 thirty teams will take to their grills, forks in hand, secret recipes folded and stashed in pockets, all for the glory of the title and the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped to raise a significant amount of money for Step Up For Soldiers. And your team could take home that title, grill forks raised high!
The competition will start with a level playing field: everyone will have the same meats, be in the same location and have the same time constraints. But thrown into the mix will be individual rubs, sauces
or marinades, grill temperatures and methods of cooking that will leave someone going home with braggin’ rights for the next year. Registration is now open and space is limited. Register early for the best deal - $115
per team before December 20th and $150 after that date.
The cook-off will be held at the lake in Carolina Beach at the junction of Lake Park Blvd. and Atlanta Avenue. Admission is free, and tickets can be purchased to sample the BBQs after the double-blind
judging is completed. There will be three bands; The Cut opens, next is local favorite Bibis Ellison and the headliner will be Wilmington’s own Machine Gun. In addition, there will be raffles, arts and craft vendors
plus more food and drink for purchase.
Proceeds benefit Step Up For Soldiers, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of our disabled veterans and their families. This year Step Up is proud to announce a new project, “Soldier Build”, a plan to build a transitional home for veterans - along with their families - who are attending local universities. The house will be built along the lines of a Habitat for Humanity home (i.e. with hard work, sweat and determination), and Step Up For Soldiers is starting a donation program in order to supply the materials needed for the house and the overall project. Proceeds from this event will help to fund this project. Call 910-431-8122 or visit www.stepupforsoldiers.org.

Community Blood Drive at the Aquarium
Gift giving is top of mind for many people this time of year. You can give a gift that can save a life and won’t cost you a dime. The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher hosts an American Red Cross Community Blood Drive on Thursday, December 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Eligible donors are encouraged to donate as blood supplies can become low during the holidays. Inclement weather and seasonal illnesses mean fewer donations, yet the need remains. Someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds and a single blood donation can save as many as three lives, according to the American Red Cross.
Individuals who are at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Schedule your appointment to save a life by visiting www.redcrossblood.org & search by sponsor code AQUARIUM.

The First Annual Carolina Beach Dragon Boat Regatta and Festival
October 25 and 26, 2013
Carolina Beach Town Marina
Hosted by the Town of Carolina Beach, Got-em-on Live Bait Club, Carolina Beach Fire Department, and Carolina Beach Arts and Activities Committee
This event brings together sports, health and wellness, and arts to celebrate our island community. Proceeds from this event will go directly to the Carolina Beach Volunteer Fire Department and the Got-Em-On-Live-Bait Club to help fund the clubʼs annual Disabled Sportsmanʼs Fishing Tournaments.
Team Practice runs with coaching are on Thursday and Friday, October 24th and 25th between 3PM - 6:30PM. Each team is encouraged to get in one practice run. Race Day is Saturday, October 26th starting at 8am.
Gather a group of friends, customers, family or co-workers and make plans to field a team and get out on the water. A dragon boat is a colorful 45-foot long watercraft that resembles a canoe. It's manned by a crew of 20, plus a steersman at the stern of the boat, and a drummer/pace setter to set the pace. Teams are encouraged to signup 22-24 members to cover any absences on race day.
Teams can be made up of people of all ages, genders and skill levels. No experience is required. The key to successful and fun dragon boating is the ability to paddle in sync. Race teams should be setup with equal amounts of males and females participating. The races are fast and furious. Each race lasts about two minutes, and all teams will have at least two heats during race day. Substitutions with signed up alternates are encouraged.

Island Day is a cooperative effort between the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce, Carolina Beach Downtown Initiative, Carolina Beach Arts & Activities Committee, and the Town Staff, Elected Officials, and Volunteers of both Carolina Beach, NC and Kure Beach, NC.

Spotlight On Business — Footprints - Local Artisans Boutique
Footprints – Local Artisans Boutique is a new shopping experience for Carolina Beach. Opened by Trisha Rogers in May, the shop is comprised of booths that can be rented by local artists and crafters to showcase and sell their work.
Originally offering the work of three artisans, Footprints now features the talent of twelve individuals, and still has room for a few more (although spaces are filling quickly). Merchandise includes an array of original items, including:
The concept for Footprints is one much like an artist cooperative. By pooling resources, many individuals are able to have their own “mini boutique” within a larger retail space that would not have been feasible to lease and run individually. In addition to working together to cover the overhead of the space, everyone works together to promote the boutique, and subsequently, each others businesses and artwork.

Carolina Beach Boardwalk a "Classic Beach Boardwalk"
FoxNews.com has selected the Carolina Beach Boardwalk as one of its 7 Classic Beach Boardwalks.
Beach boardwalks are a tradition dating back to the early 20th century. They are generally located right along the shoreline and are known for various amusements including carousels, rides, arcades, fair-style food and treats like ice cream and taffy.
The FoxNews.com feature highlights boardwalks across the U.S. that make particular efforts to be safe, fun, clean, and family-friendly. We are not surprised that our Carolina Beach Boardwalk fits the bill so well!
At this point in mid-September, the rides are closed for the season and many of the businesses have transitioned to off-season mode. However, the Boardwalk is set to undergo major improvements laid out in a New Hanover County $500,000 grant approval for the redevelopment, reconstruction, and expansion of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.
We are excited to have been included in the FoxNews.com profile of the Top 7 Beach Boardwalks and we look forward the expansion project, set to break ground this month.

Winner of Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival 2013 Poster Announced
This year's Artist for the 20th Annual Pleasure Island Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival is local artist Robert Scott Knowles from Carolina Beach, North Carolina.
Robert's historic fantasy-inspired Buddy Guy playing the blues on the bayou was inspired by a paragraph in Buddy Guy's Bio:
This year we had a total of eleven entries which made for a difficult decision for the judges. All of the entries were very colorful, fanciful and energetic. The uniqueness and the implied dream-like memory set this year’s selection apart from the others. Robert previously won top honors for the 2008 Seafood Blues & Jazz poster which we commonly call "The Edgar and Johnny Winter Poster."
We are proud to have Robert (once again) represent the 20th year of this great Festival. Robert will be attending the Festival where he will be signing posters, discussing his inspiration for this piece and offering additional selections of his unique artwork in the Arts and Wine Garden. Posters. T-shirts will be on sale soon at the Chamber offices and will be available at the Festival as long as supplies last.
Congratulations Robert!!
Robert's historic fantasy-inspired Buddy Guy playing the blues on the bayou was inspired by a paragraph in Buddy Guy's Bio:
Though Buddy Guy will forever be associated with Chicago, his story actually begins in Louisiana. One of five children, he was born in 1936 to a sharecropper’s family and raised on a plantation near the small town of Lettsworth, located some 140 miles northwest of New Orleans. Buddy was just seven years old when he fashioned his first makeshift "guitar"—a twostring contraption attached to a piece of wood and secured with his mother’s hairpins. He recounts his early efforts with the instrument, and his ability to keep his faith when his family chased him out of the house for making a racket. "I would go out in the yard, on the levee, to practice," he says. "We didn’t have electric lights or running water—you could hear that guitar a mile away in the country, so I’d have to go a long way away so they didn’t say 'Get out of here with that noise!'"When we talked to Robert about his inspiration, he said: "After I read that Bio, I had no doubt from the beginning what this artwork was to become. I researched a sharecropper’s life during the 30’s, the dress they wore and the life they led. I took Buddy at 76 and translated his facial features to that of a 7 year old. I was moved by Buddy’s memories so long ago and decided to translate this memory into a piece of art." As you can see, Robert has created a unique expression of a Buddy Guy memory to share with all of the Festival-goers this year.

North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Named One of the Best Aquariums in the U.S.
The Travel Channel published their list of the Best Aquariums in the U.S. and the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher came in at #4 out of 20 on the list!
Of course, we're not surprised because we know and love our Fort Fisher Aquarium. From the live alligator feeding to hands-on exploration of horseshoe crabs, snails, and hermit crabs, live diving exhibits, and up-close-and-personal encounters with the sharks in the big tank, the Fort Fisher Aquarium is an amazing place for discovery and exploration. It can also be a wonderfully peaceful place during some of the less busy hours. It is truly a destination for every age!
The location along the southernmost tip of Pleasure Island provides a spectacular backdrop for the Aquarium, quickly putting the exhibits in context.
The Travel Channel loves the Fort Fisher Aquarium for the "fear-factor moments" you'll experience here:

Carolina Beach Boardwalk Improvements
Earlier in August, the New Hanover County Commissioners Meeting heard a grant request for the redevelopment, reconstruction, and expansion of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. This request by the Town of Carolina Beach for a $500,000 grant from the County was approved on August 19th, 2013. The full renovation of the Boardwalk is slated at $1.6 million with groundbreaking to happen as early as September 2013.
This is a BIG Win-Win for the Town of Carolina Beach, Pleasure Island, and all of New Hanover County including residents and visitors to our little piece of paradise.
A big congratulations to all involved including the Town of Carolina Beach, the Boardwalk Makeover Committee, the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce and its members, and countless hours from caring volunteers.
The Carolina Beach Boardwalk was recently named Top Ten in a list of America's Best Boardwalks compiled by Food and Wine Magazine. The Magazine mentioned carnival rides, arcade games, and numerous food stands, with emphasis on Britt's Donut Shop, one of the oldest draws on the Boardwalk, as the reasons for this recognition.
The Boardwalk was also recently awarded a spot in USA Today's compilation of Best boardwalks for food across the USA. Coming in at #8, Britt's helped propel the Carolina Beach Boardwalk to yet another Top Ten spot in the national spotlight.
And this is just the beginning of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk's resurgence. This recent grant for redevelopment and expansion of the Boardwalk is an investment in our island and our region that will continue to provide benefits well into our future.

We work together with business professionals to show how the use of Direct Mail alone or when integrated with other media can enhance marketing efforts and drive growth. Additionally, the USPS offers a robust and highly competitive suite of domestic and international shipping products and services with appropriate levels of tracking and no hidden charges. Upon request we will perform a free analysis on current ship-ping methods and make recommendations that positively affect the bottom line.
What you need to know is there are two sales specialists domiciled in the Wilmington area here to help you use the mail to grow your business. As an example, I used Direct Mail to help a grocery store owner competing with larger chains, increase his sales of featured items by 100%, and by 30% in all other departments. Who can argue with that ROI? On the shipping side, I worked with a large tactical supply company to switch their packages to Priority Mail, which in turn saves them over $100,000 per year in delivery charges. Together we can enhance your current efforts by determining appropriate ways for you to drive similar outcomes. The Bottom line is we are ready, willing and able to help you drive positive business results. A partnership with the Postal Service can be a great win/win for all. Runners love Pleasure Island for the scenery and variety - run on the road, beach, or on trails in the Carolina Beach state park (which are also great for hiking). The popular Lo Tide Run brings thousands of runners to the island, everyone from beginners to elite runners, each year for this wildly popular event held in March. In addition to the Lo Tide several other races are held on Pleasure Island each year ranging from 1 mile fun runs to triathlons.
Other popular activities include biking (either for exercise or just as a way to get from place to place,) yoga, tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, skateboarding, soccer, frisbee golf, baseball & softball, and much more! And of course, once you've worked up a sweat at your favorite sport that's just the excuse you need to go grab one of those mouth watering donuts!
