Spotlight on Business - Surf House Cafe & Shop

There is a lot going on this "off" season at Surf House Cafe & Shop at 604 N. Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach.

If you haven't had a chance to stop by the former Cove Surf Shop location, you are missing out on Carolina Beach's best kept secret.

Having opened in August of last year, the team (led by Brad Jones and Craig Love) has continued to build its business through a diverse and healthy range of breakfast, lunch and dinner menu items, creative and niche brands in its surf shop, and a full calendar of community events that include monthly local artist receptions and Surf Cinemas.

The shop in general is a concept built on combining the retail and cafe environments into a place where the community can visit at every hour of the day. Mornings provide a great spot for coffee with free wi-fi and great breakfast items that include a cake bread french toast, made-to-order egg sandwiches, and the recently added skillet potato hashes.

Lunch at the cafe is extremely popular. A wide array of menu items that feature our hormone-free meats and local produce from Federal Point Farms, have solidified the cafe as a "must go" location in the area. The menu changes seasonally and new items are incorporated in daily specials all the time. Their ability to stay creative and use the freshest ingredients so that guests can find something new on frequent visits has been proven with their seasonal additions that include daily homemade soups, the "Best Hot Chocolate in the World Menu", Mulled Apple Cider, and the aforementioned Breakfast Hashes.

The dinner menu features flavorful dishes that are designed to give guests a value option for dinner. Surf House features "date nights" - Monday through Thursday - that offer two dinners for twelve dollars, and wine and beer start at $2 with an ever-expanding range of selection.

The surf shop aspect is that of a classic surf shop that continually looks to introduce exciting new brands. Spring and Summer will showcase new retail brands yet to be found in the area and a quiver of new boards from local surf board shaper Will Allison among a ton of other product, apparel, and surf accessories.

Additionally, with one of the core tenets at Surf House being to measure itself by its impact on the community, the group is expanding its event makeup - looking to introduce a range of options this spring, from beach cleanups and group paddle board outings, to beer tastings.

Surf House launched its non-profit community program, "A Swell Cause", by raising dollars for a local family in need this holiday and contributing additional dollars to Carolina Beach Elementary School "Go Green Club", and is working hard to identify additional opportunities to rally local causes.

The team at the shop is dedicated to being green (all of their TOGO ware is compostable, all print materials are on recycled paper, and the group recycles all plastic, glass, and metals in shop) and the shop itself utilized a TON of reusable materials in the build-out phase, that included reclaimed barn wood from a 100 year old tobacco barn.
