Race into Spring on Pleasure Island!

Cold weather got you down? Have you already fallen behind on those New Year’s goals to get in shape? With Pleasure Island’s breathtaking coastal backdrop, brisk, sunny days and several noteworthy sporting events on the horizon, it’s time to borrow Nike’s catch phrase and "Just Do It." So, whether you’ll need track shoes, Polar Tech clothing, a wetsuit, paddle or iPod, gather your gear and get ready! Best of all, these activities will get you through those dark winter days and in perfect shape for summer! Here’s what you have to look forward to:

12th Annual Polar Plunge - Saturday, February 13th
Make like a polar bear and take a refreshing wintertime dip in the invigorating waters of the mighty Atlantic! A number of other activities will be on tap to coincide with this frosty fun including live music, a silent auction and the always popular costume contest. With the plunge set for 3:00 in the afternoon, there are also two excellent warm up activities: a 5K and 1-Mile Walk, both at 1:30 pm. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk will serve as the official event hub. Of course, you will be “Freezin for a Reason," as all proceeds benefit New Hanover County Special Olympics. Featuring a 5K and 10K run, a 5K walk, raffles and a silent auction, this event benefits local families who are fighting cancer and experiencing financial crisis. The competition begins at 8 am on the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.

These races strive to empower the community, increase awareness, and support and honor local cancer warriors. And, don’t miss the fun-filled after party hosted by the Lazy Pirate (701 North Lake Park Blvd) beginning at 11am. Use this link to register: http://www.lotiderun.org/

The Holland Hustle 5k - Sunday, April 24th
Please make plans to support the Carolina Beach Elementary School by participating in the Holland Hustle! This annual event is a great way to show support for one of our local public schools and promote fitness and fun! In addition to the races, the 1.2-mile timed Adventure Run is especially for kids aged 13 and under. It will have an obstacle course that includes climbing walls, tire pull, tire-run, army crawl, sandbag relay, and the shot put. Older children are welcome to participate, they just will not be timed. The traditional 5k run takes place afterwards.

Be sure to sign up early, or at least by April 10th. That way, you are guaranteed a Dry Fit/Sport Tec Shirt. (Sizes include Youth XS-L and Adult Unisex XS-XL) Even if you do not have school-aged children, you are encouraged to hit the course for this worthwhile community event. Race proceeds will benefit Carolina Beach Elementary School Music and Technology program. The race was created in memory of two special teachers – Ms. Vickie Holland and Ms. Paula Holland who passed away of cancer.
