Progress On The Carolina Beach Boardwalk

CB Boardwalk Makeover

Comprised of a group of citizens and Carolina Beach businesses, the infamous CB Boardwalk is undergoing a full makeover in order to enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike.

Through the financial aid of public and private contributions, the area will receive fresh paint, planters, murals, sculptures, artwork, shady trees, flower shrubs, comfortable benches and new trash / cigarette receptacles to keep the area clean.

The purpose of this makeover is to provide a safe, healthy and beautiful environment as a means of cultural expression and to encourage thoughtful development of the area. The city wishes to further community outreach by promoting education of the environment and increase area entertainment opportunities. Additionally, this makeover will further support a healthy lifestyle for CB citizens by providing a peaceful place to enjoy jogging, yoga and other athletic opportunities.

Carolina Beach Boardwalk Improvements

Earlier in August, the New Hanover County Commissioners Meeting heard a grant request for the redevelopment, reconstruction, and expansion of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.  This request by the Town of Carolina Beach for a $500,000 grant from the County was approved on August 19th, 2013.  The full renovation of the Boardwalk is slated at $1.6 million with groundbreaking to happen as early as September 2013.

This is a BIG Win-Win for the Town of Carolina Beach, Pleasure Island, and all of New Hanover County including residents and visitors to our little piece of paradise.

A big congratulations to all involved including the Town of Carolina Beach, the Boardwalk Makeover Committee, the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce and its members, and countless hours from caring volunteers.

The Carolina Beach Boardwalk was recently named Top Ten in a list of America's Best Boardwalks compiled by Food and Wine Magazine.  The Magazine mentioned carnival rides, arcade games, and numerous food stands, with emphasis on Britt's Donut Shop, one of the oldest draws on the Boardwalk, as the reasons for this recognition.

The Boardwalk was also recently awarded a spot in USA Today's compilation of Best boardwalks for food across the USA. Coming in at #8, Britt's helped propel the Carolina Beach Boardwalk to yet another Top Ten spot in the national spotlight.

And this is just the beginning of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk's resurgence. This recent grant for redevelopment and expansion of the Boardwalk is an investment in our island and our region that will continue to provide benefits well into our future.

Carolina Beach Boardwalk Makeover Shining in Holiday Season

The Star-News recently reported on the First Annual Christmas by the Sea event put on by the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Makeover committee.  They noted the success of the amusement park rides on the Boardwalk this past summer and how the committee hopes to extend that success into the holiday season.

Over the last two years, the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Makeover committee has worked to improve the image of the boardwalk through landscaping and painting as well as improve the draw of the area with family entertainment, including weekly live music at the Gazebo accompanied by a fireworks display.  And, this past summer saw the return of the amusement park rides that once marked the prime of the Boardwalk district.

The amusement park rides brought an unprecedented number of people to the Boardwalk compared to the last few decades.  While Christmas by the Sea may not necessarily bring the same number of visitors, the event may help to cement the area's presence as a year-round attraction and will hopefully become a long-term tradition.

Farmers Market Coming to the Carolina Beach Boardwalk?

The Carolina Beach Town Council had it's weekly meeting last night (Tuesday, July 14th) and the Star-News reports that the members gave tentative approval to a farmers market at the Boardwalk gazebo Saturday mornings from 7 am to 12 noon. The proposal included the dates of July 25th through September 26th.

It looks as though the farmers market proposal needs some more logistical details worked out, but the town council members voted unanimously to approve the concept of the farmers market.

Ken Badoian, who helped start the Wilmington Farmers Market, introduced the proposal and told the Star-News that he would like to see the market begin at the end of July but would postpone the start date to make sure everything was done right.

The Carolina Beach Boardwalk is Back!

The Boardwalk at Carolina Beach, NC is featured on the front page of the Star-News this morning (Monday, July 13th) under the headline: "Boardwalk's back" with a wonderful photo of the amusement rides, music at the gazebo, and plenty of visitors.

The article talks about how the Carolina Beach Boardwalk rejuvenation project is really gaining traction. People are drawn to the area for amusement rides, music in the gazebo, and weekly fireworks. The Boardwalk Makeover Committee is focused on improving the overall image of the Boardwalk area as well as the attractions that bring people there. "Though they see room for improvement, locals, business owners, and tourists see definite progress over the past year and a half," states the article.

Carolina Beach town Councilman Dan Wilcox has been dedicated to the project and, along with the Boardwalk Makeover Committee, has worked to take something the town already has and make it better. A year ago the committee, along with many volunteers, labored to make physical improvements while this year the committee, city, and Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce has worked to make improvements in the entertainment and attractions at the Boardwalk.

Overall, the Carolina Beach Boardwalk is on the right track . Business owners and visitors alike are happy about the improvements and look forward to seeing more and more positive changes in the years to come.

Grant Awarded to the Pleasure Island Foundation

On Tuesday, October 28th, The Pleasure Island Foundation for a Sustainable Community was presented a $5,000 donation from the Cape Fear Garden Club to benefit the Boardwalk Makeover Project.

Arlene Mancini was instrumental in seeking out the Grant from the Cape Fear Garden Club in June of this year. Also involved in completing the Grant packet was Mayor Pro Tem Dan Wilcox, the Town of Carolina Beach, and the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce.

Mayor Pro Tem Dan Wilcox stated he "would like to thank, on the Town's and Boardwalk Makeover Project's behalf, the Cape Fear Garden Club for selecting our project for their grant program. This location will be a pleasing sight for thousands of visitors every year, so we're excited they selected this project. I'm looking forward to the Garden Club members visiting this site when it's complete and perhaps including it in their 2010 Garden Tour!"

The Boardwalk Makeover Project is excited to start working with the resources from this Grant and truly appreciates the opportunity awarded them from the Cape Fear Garden Club.

Thank you!
